- Lena Waithe, actor and producer, comments at the NAACP Image Awards regarding charges dropped against Jussie Smollett
- When asked about making sense of Jussie she replies that he was exonerated and cleared of all charges
- Rebukes Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago police department saying “police ain’t always been protecting and serving brown people”
Lena Waithe stands with Jussie Smollett believing that he was “cleared” of all charges. She believes now that we as the public should should stand back and really take a look at ourselves.
When asked about Mayor Rahm and the Chicago PD coming out against Smollett she claims the police have not always protected minorities. The successful producer stated that she doesn’t always believe the police but believes black people first.
The police commissioner is black.
Not everyone agreed with Waithe’s take on Smollett. Piers Morgan made the point that Smollett has made it harder for real victims of hate crimes in the future to be taken seriously.
